1U x1 PCI Express Watchdog Timer with Batteryless System Logger is part of the PocketShark Family™ dedicated to system monitoring and crash recovery. It is a unique device that combines a watchdog timer and a logger functionality in one device and was designed for computer systems located in the office or in the “field.” Such systems include data servers, embedded appliances, and IOT devices, and they must operate 24/7 without interruption.
Watchdog Timer and Batteryless System Logger are implemented as two independent units. Each communicates with the host processor as a separate COM port via an x1 PCI Express upstream interface.
Watchdog Timer is capable to automatically reboot computer, embedded appliance or IoT device in case of hovering or system crash by sending RESET signal or, in case system still hovering after RESET signal, – toggle OFF/ON system power supply for the computer system restart. The standard 2×5/2.5mm 10-pin connector, located on the device, enables connection the Watchdog Timer to system RESET connector and to system POWER control circuits directly, or via Watchdog Timer Power Adapter (SKU-091- 40).
The duration of the Watchdog timer interval, RESET signal, and power supply toggling timing are configurable using a software utility under Linux operation system.
Batteryless System Logger can record system and environmental information from OS and internal sensors in the Logger’s non-volatile memory during regular operation and in the event of a system crash or power outage. The Logger has multiple internal sensors that measure ambient temperature, air pressure, humidity, shock, and vibration. It is powered from the system PCI Express interface without any internal battery or external power source. The recorded information is accessible at any time by using the software utility under the Linux operating system.
Using a Batteryless System Logger, any computer system can have system and environmental information for analysis-even if the device has no storage resources (no hard drive or writable flash memory) and in the event of a system crash or power outage. The fault diagnostic process for such systems becomes significantly faster and cost-effective, and as a result, the Logger increases the reliability of the whole system.
The device has 2.6″ x 1.8″ dimensions and fits into 1U servers. It is retained inside the chasse without a bracket using an Amfeltec PCI Express retainer (US Pat. #9,996,475). Its operation temperature range is from -40°C to +85°C and doesn’t require any service or maintenance during its lifetime (over ten years).
